Listed on our main pages are towns and cities with population of over 6,000 with some exceptions. For overlay telephone codes (area codes introduced to cover an existing code) we list larger cities, generally over 20,000 population. Major cities of over 50,000 people are highlighted in bold text.

About the North American Numbering Plan:

The NANP is a unified telephone numbering plan used by the United States and its territories, Canada and some Caribbean nations. All telephone numbers within the NANP have the same dialing format (3 digit area code + 7 digit local number).

Countries part of the NANP:

The main two countries using North American area codes are the US and Canada. Other countries/territories using this numbering system are: American Samoa, Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guam, Jamaica, Montserrat, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos, US Virgin Islands.

Dialing between 2 NANP countries:

Technically, calling from a country using the North American Numbering Plan to another is just like placing a US state to state phone call (1 + xxx + xxx xxxx). In other words there is no need to dial the 011 IDD code required for all other overseas calls. However, as far as calling rates are concerned - you will incur international charges when dialing out of your country regardless of whether that particular country uses the NANP or not.

Example: say you want to place a call to Jamaica from the USA. The area code for Jamaica is 876 so you would simply dial: 1 876 xxx xxxx.
